My name is Nakea Tyson and I’m a Project Manager for Brand Marketing at USA Today. I’m African American and Native American. My dad is Native American. My grandmother on his side is fifty percent Native American, and her father was a chief of a tribe.
I learned some beauty stuff because of dance. I was on the dance team in high school; in a performance arts troop. So, that’s kind of how I learned to do makeup. We had to wear fake eyelashes, rhinestones, etc. You had to wear a good amount of makeup, too, because you wanted the judges and audience to see you.
My mother always wore a red lip and wore makeup, but it was very natural. I wish I could remember the name of the lipstick. It used to come in a green tube. It was like old school!
Honestly, I feel like I learned my beauty routine through my friends and Instagram. It’s funny because back in the day, I used the do the black lip liner thing. Looking back at those pictures I’m like, “Oh my God. Why did I try that?” But everything I learned was through my friends and that’s what we did.
Then, when I first moved to New York, my roommate was a makeup artist. So I learned a lot of things through her. I kind of just navigated my way. When I first bought makeup, I bought MAC and that’s all I knew.
But now, I have new products I love. For primer: I love this brand Hourglass. I don’t know if it’s a sub-brand, but they have a mineral primer called Veil. It goes on so light. It doesn’t make your face cakey. It’s pretty expensive, but the great thing about Sephora is that you can get it in travel size at the little Impulse buy section.
One of my friends put me onto a tinted moisturizer and I started using it as my foundation. It’s by NARS and it’s called Annapurna. It’s a little coin, but it’s worth it.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is the thing for brows. Like it makes your eyebrows look so natural. I finish my brows off with the Anastasia Clear Brow gel. I feel like that is my go-to for eyebrows. Live by it. Die by it. She’s the goddess of eyebrows.
My go to mascara is YSL “Shocking” because I don’t know how to put on fake eyelashes anymore and this makes it look like I have fake eyelashes.
Anastasia’s liquid lipsticks are everything! Everything. They dries on matte and it stays on for hours.
I feel like Brown girls are winning right now. It is a great time to be a Brown girl in America. I feel like all of these leading women in media and television shows and movies are showing different facets of what it means to be a Black woman and that’s really important.
So, I feel like it’s a great time to be a Black woman but I also feel like it’s only the beginning. I feel like we’re just scratching the surface. But I really feel like there’s no way we can lose right now because we’re flourishing. Flourishing.
