Dark Girl: The Extremely Red Lip

I think we’re all pretty much past this notion that dark girls and bold, spicy red lips don’t match. We do. And that’s really all to be said about it. Don’t think about it; just go find your best bright red lip. And make this journey fun; a good red lip is an important arsenal in our beauty stash.

What I wore:

I’m rocking the Anastasia Liquid Lipstick in American Doll (which I think is discontinued). I want you all to know that I love this color and this brand, but it will dry your lips. Layer a light swipe of balm on your lips and let it set in for about 5 minutes before you add the liquid lipstick.

How I pulled it off:

I’m very much the beauty girl that really believes in either doing a bold lip with a bold look altogether, or just make the lip the star of the show.

I went for the latter. Pulled back hair (duh), a simple cat eye and amazing foundation. The lashes are for show only! But of course, you can do what you want. This is just my suggestion: never rock a red lip without a good face of clean, matte foundation and concealer.

Great red lips for dark girls:

NYX Cosmetics in Pure Red ($5.99, Ulta)

MAC’s in Brave Red ($17, MAC) (Yellow undertones)

MAC’s in Dare You ($17, MAC) (Yellow)

Black Up’s Satin Bright Red ($23, Sephora)

Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red ($7.99, Ulta)

NARS Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl ($26, Sephora)

Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lip Color in Undending Red ($9.99, Ulta)

Sephora’s The Red ($12.50, Sephora)

  • My Holy Gail red lipstick now is Coloured Raine liquid lipstick in Cherry Blossom. It’s like the liquid lipstick version of Ruby Woo but better.

Thanks so much for sharing this. Is it very expensive? I’m going to look this up.

You mentioned that your undertones are red/yellow. So are mine. I’m super excited, because everyone always speaks of blue or cool undertones. With that said, since the American Doll lip is discontinued, which of the others on your list works for dark brown girls with red/yellow undertones? I have never, ever worn a red lip, and I just turned 40. I so very much want to. Help me. LOL…but serious.

p.s. Love this series. I’m going to try like every color you post. Thank you for emboldening me!

  • I LOVE this color. Red lipstick makes me feel like I can take over the world 🙂 Thanks for bringing attention to the fact that skin tone shouldn’t limit our lipstick choices.
